Currently in Ontario, the main housing options for people diagnosed with intellectual disabilities are living in group homes, or with family. Friendly Housemates wants to change that.
The Friendly Housemates model matches college or university students with people with intellectual disabilities as friendly housemates. Not staff, not family – friendly roommates who hang out together, learn together, and support one another.
It’s about coming together and forming a mutual relationship. Taking the time to be with one another to bond over your favourite TV show or a cup of tea. It’s not about independence, it’s about interdependence – understanding that we all have something to offer, and that each of us needs support and a kind word.
